To expand on last Friday’s post, it isn’t just what your social network says about you, but what your presence on your network says. How to you come across to others through these platforms. How do you present yourself in pictures, statuses, and profiles?
The majority of people consider facebook to be their “personal” networking site. However, whether it be one of many, or your sole presence online, it is so interesting how people choose to present themselves. Facebook profile pictures, amaze me, especially in the millenial demographic. There are a plethora of categories out there and I would just like to profile (pun intended) a few. For today’s post, I will focus on males.
1) The Super Nice College Guy
This profile pic says, “Hey, what’s goin on?!” Generally a happy dude, smart, considerate and just wants to go with the flow. You can find him wearing a baseball hat and shorts on the weekends and hanging out with his boys from school, friends he’s had since college, or his cute petite girlfriend. Other alternate profile pictures include a more formal version of him wearing a tie at a school function or one with his girlfriend.
2) Do you know I work out?
This profile pic says: I hit the gym about 8 times a week and I want you to know about it. Oh, and btw I am hot enough to wear these glasses. Well, at least I think so, that’s why I took this picture of myself and want you to see it.
Alternate profile pictures include at the beach without a shirt or with my boys pounding beers (with or without a shirt). You will almost never see a female in a profile pic with this type unless it is a celebrity or one of the girls from VH1’s Rock of Love.
3) Hand Signs that Mean Nothing
This is a wildly popular one. What is he doing? What does that mean? It’s almost like a gangsta symbol but he’s wearing an Ireland t-shirt and that may be a digital watch. I just don’t get the hand signals, stick to sign language, waving or blowing a kiss.
4) My Girlfriend Made Me Post This
It is very rare that a male actually puts up this picture on his own. He is usually hounded, persudaded, or threatened by the female in his life to do so. This pretty much says, I love my girlfriend, we get in at least 2 fights a week, and she doesn’t let me talk to any other girls, except my sister.
