The Power of Online Videos

As a society, our online behavior is constantly changing.  Our attention spans are becoming so short that we become irritated if we don’t see or read exactly what we want within 5 to 10 seconds of our search.  We become so frustrated that we move on to a new source if we don’t get what we want right away.  I am guilty of this behavior as well.

A majority of internet users watch online videos to find out information quicker and easier instead of taking the time to read through informative articles.  I even learned how to tie a bow tie from a video instead of from an instruction sheet or a seasoned professional.  So, I better hurry up and get to the important stuff before I lose your interest.  Here are some really eye-catching stats that help to prove my point about our changing online behavior.

Video Traffic

  • 60 hours of video are uploaded every minute, or one hour of video is uploaded to YouTube every second
  • Over 4 billion videos are viewed a day
  • Over 800 million unique users visit YouTube each month
  • Over 3 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube
  • More video is uploaded to YouTube in one month than the 3 major US networks created in 60 years
  • YouTube mobile gets over 600 million views a day

Viewing Time

  • 20% of online video viewers click away from a video in the first 10 seconds or less. * Visible Measures
  • By 30 seconds into an online video, 33% of viewers have moved on; at 1 minute 44% have left (regardless of the clip’s length) and almost 60% have abandoned by the 2 minute mark
  • If your video has 10 million viewers, chances are that 2 million of them saw less than 10 seconds of it

Videos and Social Media

  • 500 years of YouTube videos are watched every day on Facebook, and over 700 YouTube videos are shared on Twitter each minute
  • 100 million people take a social action on YouTube (likes, shares, comments, etc.) every week
  • There are more than 500 tweets per minute containing a YouTube link

These are some pretty impressive stats, but the big tips to take away from this blog is that you should consider online videos if you haven’t already in your marketing efforts, and also to keep your videos very short in order not to lose your ……………. audience.  Sorry, I went to watch a video for 5 seconds.
