Surf Sesh 12.12.12

Starting Point: Rdio

Why: I use Rdio, a Spotify competitor, for streaming on-demand music. The interface is great and free of Spotify’s annoying obsession with social and posting to Facebook.

Jimmy Edgar has been dominating my recent playlists, especially because of his work-friendly spare lyrics and repetitive beats, so I queued him up. (I originally discovered Edgar from a mix posted on FACT magazine — much recommended.)

Rdio displays which users have also played this artist, and also playlists they’ve created incorporating the artist, which are both great ways for music discovery. The playlist “modern boogie yus” stood out, and after seeing some familiar artists in the lineup (among many unfamiliar) I played it.

The playlist description credits Matt Irvine Brown as curator, and also links to his site, which contained interesting projects…

Including Singing Sock Puppets.
